One of the biggest challenges when using a tensioning device to cut adhesive is to maintain the correct or best cutting angle where the element transits the adhesive bead.
Using this chart above and insert a tensioning tool where the weight is and consider the pulley shown as the adhesive bead instead. This shows where the most effort would be generated at the bead.
Now use this same chart again for when using satellite pulleys. Now the higher the angle, the more lateral force is put to the satellite pulley. Keeping your angles shallow like shown above in the picture is ideal.
